Sentinel Birds…Broad-winged Hawks over Frontera.

Photo taken at Frontera by Dan Jones (2009)

On this “almost crisp” September morning, around 10 a.m., 80 to 100 Broad-winged Hawks were seen flying southward over the Frontera Thicket.  Migrating in large flocks, these small buteos are usually solitary, uncommon, and inconspicuous.  This time of year, they sometimes settle in at dusk in the tallest trees in the Thicket.
