Texas Turtle Inventory!

Donald Brown, doctoral student, holds a soft-bellied turtle to be inventoried from Frontera's wetlands.

What’s up with these turtles? When Donald Brown arrived on Wednesday to collect, mark and inventory Frontera’s turtle population we expected to see a bundle in the sardine-baited humane traps, but 24 hrs. later only one soft-bellied turtle had ventured into the traps.  Across the pond, several red sliders plunged into the water when we spotted them from the bird blind.  Are the turtles onto Brown’s fishy traps?  Last year the traps were full, and we see more turtles than ever in the pond.  We had hoped to trap and remove the non-native snapping turtle family that threatens young ducks, etc.  Maybe when Brown returns in July he’ll have more luck.   For now, it was just one excellent opportunity to see a soft-bellied turtle up close and personal.
